It takes several hours to hand paint a replica to a level that is close to the original because of the detail and subtle colours involved.

Archaeopteryx lived in the Late Jurassic period approximately 150 million years ago, similar in size to members of the crow family such as the magpie and Raven Archaeopteryx could grow to about 0.5 m (1 ft 8 in) in length.

It was a small bird with wide wings and was able to fly or glide. However Archaeopteryx has more similarities with other small Mesozoic dinosaurs than it has with modern day birds. Particularly the deinonychosaurs (dromaeosaurs and troodontids) with their sharp teeth, three fingers and claws, long bony tail and their hyperextensible second toes known as killing claws.

With these features in common it makes Archaeopteryx a great candidate for a transitional fossil between dinosaurs and birds.

Archaeopteryx plays an important role, not only in the study of the origin of birds, but in the study of dinosaurs. It was named from a feather in 1861. That same year, the first complete specimen of Archaeopteryx was announced. Over the years, ten more fossils of Archaeopteryx have surfaced. Despite variation among these fossils, most experts regard all the remains that have been discovered as belonging to a single species, although this is still debated.
